デトロイト出身のロックシンガー、ヴィンセント・デーモン・ファニアが17世紀の魔女「アリス・クーパー」の名を借りてデビューを果たしたのは1960年代末のこと。70年代初頭にはステージにヴィジュアル的な要素を大胆に取り入れたシアトリカル（演劇的）な「ショック・ロック」で一世を風靡、80年代の一時期には低迷期を迎えたものの89年の『Poison』で大復活を遂げて以降は安定した活躍を続けており、現在もなおオジー・オズボーンと並び多くの音楽ファンや後輩ミュージシャンたちの崇拝の対象となっている。

彼の約30年にわたるキャリアを総括し、90年代末にリリースされた『The Life and Crimes』は、彼が「アリス・クーパー」を名乗る以前に在籍したスパイダーズ、ナッズといったバンドによる貴重な音源から、フランク・ザッパに見出されストレート・レーベルからリリースした初期作品、大ブレイクを果たしたワーナー時代、暫しの低迷の後音楽シーンの第一線に華々しく復活したエピック時代まで、何度もの浮き沈みを経験しながらも一貫して活動を続けてきた「ロック界の怪人」の軌跡を、数多くのシングル・バージョンや貴重なレア・トラックを収録しながら描いた豪華ボックス・セット。90年代以降もマリリン・マンソンやロブ・ゾンビといったアーティストに色濃く受け継がれていった「ショック・ロック遺伝子」のルーツを、ここで改めて確認したい。
