ワーナー・ブラザーズ・レコード創業50周年を記念して限定リリースされた
10枚組199曲入りの一大歴史絵巻。フランク・シナトラからグリーン・デイまで、
歴代のヒット･アーティストが続々登場。

映画会社であるワーナー・ブラザーズ（以下WB）がレコード部門を立ち上げたのは1958年のこと。当初は同社所属の映画俳優のレコードなどを中心にリリースしていたが、人気絶頂期にあったエヴァリー・ブラザーズを他社から100万ドルで引き抜き、次いでフランク・シナトラと共同でリプリーズ・レコードを設立したあたりから本格的にポップ市場に参入、以降約50年間現在もレコード業界4大メジャーの一つに数えられる成長を遂げている。

WBレコード設立50周年を記念してリリースされた『Revolutions in Sound』は、過去50年間に同社を通じてリリースされ音楽界を賑わせた作品の数々を全199曲のボリュームでコレクトした10枚組ボックス。タブ・ハンターやコニー・スティーヴンスといった青春スターに始まり、その後のサイケデリック・ロック、70年代のシンガー・ソングライター、80年代のニューウェイヴ、90年代のオルタナティヴ・ロック…と傘下のレーベルも含め時代のトップ・アーティストを途切れることなく送り出してきた歴史の重みをひしひしと感じさせる内容。

また、このボックスには現在はWBの傘下を離れた作品も数多く収録されており、当時リプリーズからリリースされアルバムチャートを席巻したジミ・ヘンドリックスをはじめ、同社が一時的に配給を引き受けていたビーチ・ボーイズやT.レックス、ジョン・レノン、エルトン・ジョンといった大物までが“ファミリー”として名を連ねている点は非常に新鮮。ヒット曲ばかりでなく時代々々に全米を熱狂させたコメディ・アクトの録音も数多く収録されており、アメリカ芸能史の重要な一角を占め続けた同社の偉業を、改めて認識させられる超重量級ボックスである。全199曲収録という空前の規模に加えLPレコード大の特別ブックレットがすごい。曲枚の詳しいデータ、かなり珍しい写真、そしてジョー・スミス、モー・オースティン、レニー・ワロンカー、テッド・テンプルマン、ジェフ・アイロフ、などワーナー・ブラザーズ・レコードに深くかかった人たちの特別コメントも収録された全64ページ。これは一家に一セットを購入末代まで伝えたいボックスセット。
